The first episode is a direct sequel to Matt Reeves’ Batman and I imagine those who haven’t seen the last one will be a little lost. But I watched Batman not long ago, and this series did an admirable job of quickly picking me up where the movie left off without overwhelming me with a didactic summary.
The character may have absolutely nothing to do with the comic book version, but he’s interesting in his own right
It also recaptures the film’s dark aesthetic and tone quite well, though there are far more moments of sly levity in the series than in the film. As in Batman, Colin Farrell does a great job of portraying the Penguin as a stereotypical “street guy” of the mob: rough, rude, reckless, and quick to commit violence; but also cunning, cunning, and able to read people.
But so far, it’s off to a great start
I have my doubts about whether the series will give The Penguin a teenage sidekick; and I don’t know if The Penguin’s machinations will be enough to sustain an entire season.
